Fair Trade certifications began in 1999, and coffee was the first crop to go through the certification process.

The price of sugar goes beyond nutrition

Posted by admin on April 26th, 2010

Agave nectar is sweeter than sugar, so we use less of it, which helps make NadaMoo! lower in calories, carbs and net dietary sugars. These are some of the reasons we choose to use agave instead of sugar. But there is also the ethical price of sugar.

This film will be part of the Fair Trade Film Festival in Austin on May 8.

http://www.thepriceofsugar.com/about.shtml

It will give you a good look at where some of the sugar we in the US eat comes from. You don’t have to choose agave over sugar, though we hope that if you use sugar you will make it Fair Trade Certified sugar.

It’s Official! Fair Trade Certified Flavors!

Posted by admin on April 23rd, 2010

We’ve always used certified Fair Trade ingredients in Vanilla …ahh, Gotta Do Chocolate, and Java Crunch and now these flavors are officially certified!

Fair Trade isn’t just a groovy logo to add to our line-up, it’s a commitment to support and promote the economic empowerment of farmers and farm workers; environmental sustainability; and safe working conditions.

When you buy Fair Trade certified products, you help us “do good”!

What about agave?

Posted by admin on April 23rd, 2010

Oh, Internet, you wonderful and crazy alternate reality.

We love you because you give us instant access to information, commerce and each other. But we’re not always sure about you, because when we’re online it’s hard to know what and whom to trust. Who is a “troll” and who is for real?

Take, for example, the recent gossip about agave nectar. Certain people have said intentionally provocative things, stirring up arguments that lack substance and relevance in the larger conversation about sweeteners. These people don’t disclose their motives or demonstrate lack of bias. Their data isn’t up to date and doesn’t meet reasonable standards of proof. Their credentials were not vetted by anyone, and they are not associated with any reputable health-related, scientific organizations or news outlets.

But, because of you, Internet, they can claim to be “experts” and know the “truth”. And if their posts are circulated and linked to often enough, they can do what they really want to do: They can scare and confuse people, replacing a real conversation with a false one.

So, what is the real conversation about agave nectar?

In the context of all sweeteners, the conversation includes: chemical versus natural; overuse in manufacturing versus over-consumption by people; cheap and dirty versus more expensive but sustainable processing; and a whole lot of side talk and opinions about what is and what isn’t “healthy”.

In the context of NadaMoo!, the real conversation is why we use agave and whether our supplier is trustworthy.

We use agave in NadaMoo! for three main reasons:

  1. Quality: Agave is a natural sweetener – rather than a chemical one – and ours is organically, sustainably grown and processed with a small carbon footprint;
  2. Nutritional Benefits: Agave tastes sweeter than sugar, so we can use less (one serving of vanilla NadaMoo! has 1 teaspoon of agave nectar, whereas one serving of regular vanilla ice cream has 4-5 teaspoons of sugar). The result is NadaMoo! is lower in calories, dietary sugars and carbs than most other brands that use caloric sweeteners;
  3. Functionality: Agave, like any caloric sweetener in any ice cream or frozen dessert, plays a role in how NadaMoo! freezes and melts.

As for the trustworthiness of our supplier, Madhava is what we Texans call “good people” and we’re proud to be working with them. Because of this, I will let them speak for themselves. Please visit: http://www.agavemythbuster.com/ to read about the agave we use and learn more about our supplier.

OK, People of the Internet, let’s get back to using this thing the way it was meant to be used: watching educational videos on TED and shopping for shoes (of course)!
